Welcome to 2012

Welcome to all bird lovers, parrot owners, frequent travelers and everyone who needs a good home for their feathered friend while you are away.

Originally I thought I would be able to publish a blog post every week but that did not happen. There is just not enough time to do it all. Instead I am happy to just post the most important things once in a while and concentrate rather on our Newsletter, Yelp and Facebook pages.

We had a very busy year in 2011.I am proud to announce that the Bird Hotel has gown another 100% over the last 12 month. In the latest newsletter I have mentioned some statistics. Feel free and sign up for the quarterly newsletter to find out about upcoming things and updates for a period of 3 month. Of course I hope I can extend the letter with useful information and possible offers to serve the feathered community of the Bay Area.

I also wanted to inform everyone that Kya found a new home. I don’t have exact information but was informed that many people were interested in taking her in. I hope that Kya will be happy. Thank you for all the inquiries I have received.

Here is the latest Newsletter you can sign up on our webpage or Facebook.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The date already moved forward to the 14th of January in 2012 but I think it is still valid to wish everyone a Happy and successful New Year.
I apologize for the delay with this newsletter but I have to face the inevitable downfalls of small business ownership when my supporting business partners are green and wear a feather suit.
Nevertheless I am able now to give you an update of what’s new with Squawk and Howl.

The most important announcement of 2012 is right here:

We will be closed from March 5 to March 17 2012.

Many people already had been informed. Due to a family event in Europe I have to close Squawk and Howl for a couple of weeks in March of 2012. After that I will be back and be able to serve the feathered community of the Bay Area in any which way possible.

For the newcomers of Newsletter subscribers:
a quick history run down. Squawk and Howl was an existing parrot centric pet sitting business I have bought and taken over in August of 2011. I merged the pet sitting with the boarding division currently still known as the San Francisco Bird Hotel. Now I am working on the new Squawk and Howl to change the appearance with my goal to instill my own business philosophy into it. Hence, it is undergoing a serious facelift as we speak, and   2012 will be the first full year after I have taken over ownership.

Don’t forget. We are on Facebook and Yelp.  Don’t be shy and leave your review.San Francisco Bird Hotel

This is a quarterly Newsletter
and will report the most important happenings covering January to April 2012

Squawk and Howl pet sitting:

My contractors, Caroline and Ryan helped me to serve a number of clients over the last six month. Without them I would not be able to serve the whole Bay Area. We were able to deliver impeccable services and flawless communication to our clients. We are here for advice and consultations to answer any question there is with the goal to make any parrot, cat and dog and their humans a happy returning customer.

In October I drove to Oakley, California. Why Oakley and where is Oakley located anyway you might ask yourself.  Well, Oakley is the home of the famous “The Medical Center for Birds”. It is well worth the drive of the 1 hour east from San Francisco to get there. If possible avoid rush hour though, especially if you have a bird in the car.  At the Medical Center for Birds you find the specialists needed for all your avian medical questions you might have. I introduced myself as the new owner of Squawk and Howland met the staff. I was impressed by the compassion and emphatic energy I felt there. If I would recommend any veterinarian then it is the team of Dr. Brian Speer DVM, Dip ABVP,ECZM, Dr. Brenna Fitzgerald DVM and Dr. Geoffrey Olsen, DVM,DIP ABVP ( Avian).  Click here for further information:http://www.medicalcenterforbirds.com/
In November I participated at the Mickaboo Bird Rescue Annual Celebration and donated two pet sitting /boarding sessions at their silence auction. Both donations had been auctioned out and I am looking forward to offer our services to any new customers in need. Besides a delicious potluck buffet I experienced the enthusiastic energies of people with a big heart and the dedication to volunteer their time for the cause of bird rescue and adoption. This is an honorable thing to do. Check out their website here: http://www.mickaboo.org/

Our Bird Boarding Division “The San Francisco Bird Hotel”

Last year was the first year that the Bird Hotel was the most attractive vacation destination for many pet birds in San Francisco. The wildest months were November with Thanksgiving and December with Christmas. We were fully booked and very, very busy with all our guests. I am happy to report though that every single guest left happy and balanced with great vacation memories. The number of returning  clients has almost doubled from 2011 to 2012 and  jumped from 34 to 60 in addition to individual guest visits growing from 86 to 165 respectively. We have bought a number of new cages so we are able to accommodate big and small without any problems during the year of 2012.

Our latest perk is the popular “Frequent Fly-In mileage passport”, ideal for frequent guests. Some eager birds already have applied for it because by the end who could resist a free 3 day stay in the Bird Hotel with access to all the offered amenities like our beloved Spa and Alex’ water tasting events. A copy of the Fly in passport is posted on our website under services. For more details please check it out and let us know if your bird is interested. There is no application fee. Bartok, Pepita, Pablo, Piper, Alex the Grey, Gromit and Seven are the proud owners of this precious travel document. I can imagine that many more guests would be interested. Check out the link here:

Now there is nothing more to say than thank you for your trust in me to let me care for your animals. If here at the Bird Hotel or at your house I am honored to help out and make every individual vacation experience a safe, enjoyable and trustworthy one.

The most important announcement currently is that we will be closed from March 5 to March 17 2012 due to travel.  Thank you for your understanding.

I am looking forward to another year in the Bird Hotel and hope to meet many more new guests.

It will be fun. If you want to see what’s going on in the Hotel on a daily basis just jump on our Facebook Business page and enjoy the beauty of our guests.

San Francisco Bird Hotel

Our most talkative guests the “African Grey Parrots”

We are here for your parrots. Squawk & Howl has extended its services to parrot-centric in-house pet sitting to complement the core business of exclusive parrot and bird boarding of the San Francisco Bird Hotel. Pet sitting to its finest. Today we will feature one of our regular guests a very talkative African Grey parrot. Read more about those magnificent creatures.  African-Grey.com

We are specialized in the Squawk of Squawk and Howl and emphasize our parrot-centric mindset, were we feel there is a big need for professional pet sitting and bird boarding. Of course we are also looking for the clientele supporting the Howl which usually are the companion animals of the squawkers.

As we get rolling with our blog (slowly but surely) my main goal on the blog is talking about the different species of birds and parrots we care for here in the Hotel and to share some educational information about them. But most importantly we will have fun with our introductions when talking about our tiniest guests of Parotletts to the biggest guests we can accommodate in the Hotel of the size of double yellow naped Amazon.

We are also busy with preparing for the Holidays. It is hard to believe that it is already the first of October and traditionally Thanksgiving and the Christmas holidays will be the peak season for pet sitting and bird boarding. We have extended our Hotel and have increased the number of cages so every little, medium sized and large guest will be properly accommodated. Unfortunately we cannot accommodate huge guests like Macaws or Cockatoos. For you guys we gladly come to your house to take care of you there. It is our pleasure to visit you-we just need your booking in advance so we can plan accordingly.

Last week we featured the African Grey Kya who still is looking for a new home. For this week let’s stick with the African Grey parrots, since I just met a very intelligent and talkative young guy named “Alex”.  He is a different Alex than the famous one but very talented in mimicking and confusing humans as much as other birds. Alex is a frequent guest. His human travels a lot but here in the Hotel Alex never experiences a minute of boredom or loneliness.

I am highly impressed by Alex and the fact that he never runs out of energy and ideas. He wakes up in the morning highly alert and interested and talks all day long. His specialty is to imitate human sneezing and coughing.

But lately he fell into an identity crisis since he listened to all other guests and started to imitate the little voices of cockatiels. He also picked up the vocabulary of his neighbors, a bunch of Amazon parrots. All this happened within a couple of days and I wonder if Alex ever “finds” himself again….. a squeaky, soft spoken little voice appears when the cockatiel imitation comes to mind, a loud screechy Mickey Mouse voice is used when he feels like mocking the five Amazons he shares his Hotel room with…. They in turn are just watching him in bewildered wonderment. When the human aspect comes to mind the s

neezing will prevail and the coughing is accompanied by the correct human gestures and mannerism.

According to avian science the African Grey parrot is considered to be one of the most accomplished mimics. They show an incredible ability to mimic people and noisy objects. Usually every species has its own distinguished sound but all I hear from Alex is a kind of a gurgle and the imitation of every which noise he can pick up.  Unlike the Amazon parrots that always display their own voices and are proud to compete in ear shattering screaming matches. Not Alex. He sneezes and coughs and is quite happy with his accomplishments.

I hope to see you next time around when we feature another guest.

Pretty African Grey girl seeking a new home

Here is our first (hopefully helpful) article.

I was approached to help to find a new home for Kya, a nine year old African Grey female.

Unfortunately the owner is not able  to care for her anymore and is looking for new parents for Kya and the perfect home. This can be a lengthy process and I assist where  I can. If I already wouldn’t live in the Bird Hotel and wouldn’t have three squawking Amazons I would seriously considering taking Kya in.

I learned to value and love African Grey’s over the years. they are extremely loving and attentive. Their ability to talk and imitate any noise possible on the face of the earth is absolutely fascinating. I would need permission first from my Amazon flock before I could seriously consider an addition to my feathered family.

The owner gave me some background information but if anyone is seriously interested please contact me by E-mail so I can connect you with the current owner.

Kya has a bit of a plucking issue. Apparently there was a key experience in her past when she started with it. That was when she was separated from her brother.

Her personality though makes up for all physical shortcomings.

She is very loving and wants to be with you as much as possible.  She tends to be most affectionate to her “Chosen one” but can be handled by others after she adjusts to them.  Part of that is that she seems to prefer men and warms up to them much more quickly.   She likes to chew on anything from wood toys to paper or cardboard.  She has a large vocabulary of names, words, phrases and sounds and she uses some of them at appropriate times in response to something you say.   The only fears she seems to have is large items like boxes, large sheets of paper and things of that nature.

Diet

Base food: 50/50 mix of Hanson’s Lifetime Course organic and Zupreem Natural Diet.

Vegetables:  Corn, Peas, Carrots, Green beans, Lettuce

Fruit: Grapes (red or green), Apple, Pears

Nuts: Almost any kind, but seems to prefer peanuts and almonds.

Meats: Chicken and occasionally fish…

Hardware

Cages:

Her main cage is a play top 36”w x 60”h x 28”d and is only a few years old and in excellent condition.

Second cage is play top 24”w x 56”h x 22”d and is older and missing the seed catcher.

Third cage is a travel cage and is also only a few years old.

Her she is:  Kya

Perfect for someone with a big heart !

Hopefully I will hear from anyone

Birgit

Welcome to the NEW Squawk and Howl

Now finally we can begin with our blog.

A lot has happened over the last two month and the most important thing is that the San Francisco Bird Hotel now is a division of the NEW  Squawk and Howl Parrot-centric pet sitting. We have acquired the company in August of 2011 and are moving forward as a joint venture.

This Blog will include posts covering stories of both companies. The SF Bird Hotel and the official Squawk and Howl  in-house parrot-centric pet sitting services.

This will be a weekly blog and we hope we can share  funny stories about our feathered friends and/or their companion animals as well as educational articles and other interesting info about parrots  and other pet birds.

I am proud to be able to offer value added services besides exclusive bird boarding. The San Francisco Bird Hotel is specialized in small and medium sized birds and therefore the  in-house service for macaws, cockatoos is complementing our core services perfectly well.

The new Squawk and Howl website explains everything.  Please go and visit us at www.squawkandhowl.com.

The website will be launched on Tuesday September 13 2011.

Let me just extend a warm welcome to all existing flock members of  the past Squawk and Howl as well as a big hug to all our existing clients of the San Francisco Bird Hotel,  in both cases, no matter if humans, birds, canines or felines. It was a pleasure for me and my team ( Alex, Eddie and Daisy ) to serve you over the years and I know that we can do a lot more in the future.

Please sign up to receive our quarterly Newsletter starting in October of 2011.

And I also encourage all of you ( current customers or potential customers) to share your stories and/or pictures of your pets.

With this in mind I conclude and tend to my daily chores….. which does not require any dress code and goes far beyond business casual.

Squawk

Yours truly
